Inspiration is found everywhere. Fashion, Travel and the craftsmanship of other cultures. Nature, the textures and colors of the ocean, the sky, mountains and deserts.
Often we find ourselves inspired by a clients location, a family heirloom or a great piece of art in the clients home. Functionality can also inspire creative, aesthetic solutions.
I am a huge fan of architectural salvage. The column featured in the photo is one of an unmatched pair (of course) that I had been saving for years.
I had some napkin sketches and those columns to start the journey. with my architect. She was basically there to get the elevations done but she had a couple of really great ideas that I hadn't thought of. Colaboration should never include ego.

I am a huge fan of gallery walls. The piece featured is an etching a friend gave me as a gift in an epic vintage frame that is hung along a hallway with a 1930s craft project Moon face, a killer self portrait of a friend, 1950s brass taper sconces that I use to hold weird little crows. It all works together and what is great about that technique is you can continually add new acquisitions. Fill it from floor to ceiling.
Lets curate a mix of all kinds of things that speak to you. Family photos that are about your heritage, or favorite places. Your children's art (Only the good ones don't lose your mind.). Groovy vintage sconces. Mid Century straight through the mid seventies, Oil Paintings of the ocean. Found objects,
Finding that balance of color, texture and timelessness.
I find putting together a basket of ideas helps the client visualize the outcome. It also gives them tools for communication. The conversation is everything.
Barbara hates wall paper. (I used to as well but that is a different conversation)This is grasscloth Barbara, and it adds texture and utilizes the colors of sand and sun in your kitchen and the adjacent dining room.
This particular project is a very small home where every inch matters and the entire living cooking area is within view of the others. The uniformity of the blonde flooring and the selected grasscloth walls serve to reference each other and create continuity and the impression of "space".
All of Eleven Coastal's projects begin this way. I also add found objects and natural elements (In this case it was driftwood and vintage boat photos.
The idea is to edit with the help of the client. Listening to their feedback and gently stearing them to the perfect result.
Working on a project to get a secondary room ready for a senior parent moving back in with their children. Boomerang Children, boomerang Folks.
It was important to all parties to have a private, bright, warm space that can transition as more care is needed.
To start the design project we needed to assess needs and how it will be used as time passes. The room lacked a proper closet so we designed a double wardrobe with single and double hang for clothes, 4 very large roomy drawers for folded clothes and a wide center cupboard with shelves for shoes.
The TV is mounted in the center with storage across the top. there are too smaller drawers that serve as a catch all. (That is the finished door on the left. We did decide on a bit more elevated door style)
The curtains are 4 panels, the tan linen in the center, flanked by the gorgeous painterly linen. The Rug is Loloi. 100% wool over warm hardwood floors.
The client has several lovely antique pieces that will be used as a wide nightstand and a really lovely antique storage bench for additional bedding and what have you.
With the addition of a simple mid century/craftsman manual recliner it is a functional and inviting retreat.
